The Interurban Canopy

News blog covering Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and other cities north of Seattle

The Interurban Canopy is a hyperlocal news blog by Oliver James Moffat covering the city of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and other cities north of Seattle and south of Everett.

Local independent news informs neighbors, connects communities, and strengthens democracy.

That’s why I’m an amateur blogger: I’m working to inspire our neighbors to be more informed and engaged.

I link to my sources so readers can check my claims and learn more, and I publish corrections and acknowledge mistakes when I inevitably screw up (please email me directly if you see an error).

I do my best to be fair and factual, but I’m not impartial.

I believe we have a moral obligation to work hard towards a more just and equitable future, even if it takes generations to achieve.

I’m also a volunteer urban forest restoration steward at Hamlin Park with the Green Shoreline Partnership. Please feel free to come out and help dig up some noxious weeds while making new friends.

I serve on the Board of Directors of Camp United We Stand, North King County’s only legally sanctioned homeless encampment, providing tent shelter to up to 35 unsheltered people at a time.

I volunteer on The Urbanist election endorsement committee, and I’m a Precinct Committee Officer (PCO) with the Washington State 32nd Legislative District Democrats.

You can find me at Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church working on the Social Action Ministry and the Atheist, Humanists, and Agnostics group.

My writing is sometimes republished in Shoreline Area News, The Urbanist, My MLT News, My Edmonds News, and My Lynnwood News.

I post on the socials because that’s where people get their news and information (like it or not). I have dozens of followers on TikTok, Bluesky, Nextdoor, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Substack.

Unless otherwise noted, all content on The Interurban Canopy is free to share under the Creative Commons (CC BY) license.

I don’t use AI to write, but sometimes I use AI to transcribe, research, summarize, and proofread. All content is written and reviewed by me, and any errors are my own.

I welcome tips, feedback, or corrections. Please email me directly.
